For any type of session, you want to make sure you’re choosing the right photographer, but with so many options to choose from, how do you even narrow it down? If you’re anything like me, you might be a bit indecisive when it comes to making the decision — it’s an investment, I don’t blame ya! I want to give you a few things to always consider when you’re choosing a photographer for your wedding, your engagement, your senior pictures, etc.

Do you love the photographer’s style?
When I say this, I mean you should love their work including their editing style, their poses, their locations, etc. You shouldn’t feel like you need to put a filter on the photos you paid for, and you should consider if this is a style that you could see framing in your home! Whenever I am looking for a photographer, I spend a lot of time looking through Instagram finding photographers that resonate with me and fit my personal style.

Does the photographer seem like someone you could vibe well with?
Your experience heavily relies on how well you vibe with your photographer. After all, you are spending a couple hours one-on-one with them! Are they someone that you believe would make you feel confident? Do you feel comfortable being yourself around them? If you don’t know the answer to those questions, definitely ask the photographer to hop on a phone call or FaceTime call to get to know them a little better! We all know those friends that hype you up when they’re taking a picture of you in your favorite outfit — you want your photographer to be THAT friend, and if they’re the right one for you, they will be!

Have you gone through their website thoroughly or seen a full gallery of their work?
Instagram is a highlight reel. Photographers post their best work on Instagram, so you’re seeing a very small amount of their work, not including their detail shots, all their posed/candid shots, etc. Especially when you’re hiring a wedding photographer, you should always ask the photographer to see a full wedding gallery to make sure you love their detail shots, their portrait shots, their reception shots, etc.
Remember that your session is about you, and you’re hiring a photographer to capture the best version of you. Don’t settle for a photographer (especially on your wedding day). As photographers, our main goal is to provide our clients with beautiful, genuine photos that capture you at your best and that you love!
